There is significant evidence that Puna Geothermal Venture influenced the 2018 eruption of the Kilauea Volcano by pumping water into their geothermal wells that created a much more explosive eruption. It’s important to note that according to PGV’s own records, there was a total of 32, 237 barrels or 1,342,194 gallons of water that was pumped into four wells. These wells had a combined total capacity of ~140,000 gallons which meant almost 1.2 million gallons of excess water was artificially introduced into the superheated subterranean geology of the Kilauea Volcano. This act of “quenching” their wells was made without any regard for the surrounding environment or local community and had a devastating impact. There are thousands of people already affected by the actions of the geothermal company and there are many concerns that affect the people not being addressed.
Right now, Puna Geothermal Venture is trying to expand its operations in the Lower East Rift Zone and has presented a draft Environmental Impact Statement that is grossly insufficient. This EIS is filled with outdated research, inaccuracies and a complete disregard for the impacts on the environment, local community and culture. It’s well past time to shed much-needed light on Puna Geothermal Venture.
An Independent EIS Report is Critical
It is time to get an honest and independent environmental impact statement on the impacts of Puna Geothermal Venture. We've begun raising money towards this effort. Our goal is to hire Environmental Science International – A full-service environmental consulting firm that specializes in environmental assessment, investigation, remediation, planning, and management. They will provide an unbiased Environmental Impact Statement on behalf of the people. We must have an expert analysis that is free from corporate influence. There is an immediate need for an independent EIS that further investigates and presents transparent evidence of what happened during the 2018 Kilauea eruption along with decades of environmental injustice by Puna Geothermal Venture.
